Academic Integrity at ADU

  • Office of Academic Integrity

    Mission of Abu Dhabi University

The mission of Abu Dhabi University provides for a high quality education, along with, developing students’ sense of ethics, morality, and social responsibility. Academic integrity at Abu Dhabi University is a fundamental institutional value governing its Community. Members of Abu Dhabi University Community, comprising of students, faculty, and staff, are expected to promote ethical behavior and maintain the highest standards of academic, personal, and professional integrity in all facets of study, research, work, and the pursuit of career objectives.

The Office of the Academic Integrity Structure

As a part of the measures aimed at maintaining an environment characterized with Academic integrity (AI), Abu Dhabi University has revised its Academic Integrity Policy in 2009. To ensure the full implementation of AIP, as well as, building an infrastructure to support and sustain the highest standards of ethics at all levels of the institution, Abu Dhabi University created the Office of Academic Integrity (OAI).

The broad objective of OAI is to promote, foster, and maintain a culture of academic integrity and the highest standards of ethics for all constituents at Abu Dhabi University. This objective will be achieved through a continuous process of:

    1. Raising awareness and sensitivity towards issues related to ethics, morality, and personal responsibility, as well as, educating the Abu Dhabi University community regarding different aspects of AI.
    2. Implementing the provisions of AIP.
  • Office of Academic Integrity Structure

The Office of Academic Integrity (OAI) was established in 2009, on the directive of the Executive Board of Governors of Abu Dhabi University, and under the leadership of the Chancellor.

In January 1, 2016, Dr. Hamdi Sheibani, currently the Dean of College of Arts and Science was appointed as the new Head of the Office of Academic Integrity. The OAI provides leadership in motivating efforts to promote and heighten the values of academic integrity across the institution and among the ADU community including students, faculty, and staff.

    Mission Statement

Promoting and supporting academic integrity throughout the University community, fostering an environment of academic trust, honesty, fairness, respect, and responsibility within its student, faculty and staff bodies, and exhibiting and upholding Abu Dhabi University Code of Honor

The mission of OAI establishes the following mandates. These mandates are achieved through the support of the Office of the Provost, and in collaboration with the Heads of academic and non-academic units.

    • Creating an environment where students, faculty, and staff are recognized for having high levels of integrity.
    • Promoting academic integrity as an indispensable part of students’ personal and intellectual growth.
    • Increasing students, faculty and staff’s awareness of issues related to academic integrity.
    • Fostering a climate of trust, honesty, and high standards of ethics in the pursuit of academic excellence.
    • Promoting a commitment to honesty and integrity among all members of the University community; and
    • Implementing the provisions of AIP.

Goals, Objectives, and the Responsibilities of OAI

The role of OAI is educational, informational, investigatory, and advisory. Its main duties and responsibilities are to reinforce the culture of academic integrity at Abu Dhabi University by:

    • Raising awareness related to the issue of academic integrity
    • Providing advice and counseling to students to help prevent violations of the provisions of AIP
    • Producing and delivering tutorials and workshops on academic integrity for new and returning undergraduate and graduate students, and new faculty and staff

    • Coordinating University-wide academic integrity initiatives
    • Maintaining and updating the University academic integrity Webpage

Operational Activities of Office of Academic Integrity

The Procedural Guidelines for Academic Integrity Policy Implementation articulates the operational activities of OAI in three distinct and interrelated areas.

Educating Abu Dhabi University Community and creating awareness -- The Office of Academic Integrity starts its AI Awareness Campaign (the Campaign) by holding series of "Information Sessions" for students, faculty, and staff. The main purpose of the "Information Sessions" at both campuses is to provide information related to fundamental elements of AIP, its provisions, and the sanctions in cases of violations.

Implementation of the provisions of AIP in cases of violations -- Implementation of the AIP invariably entails instances of AI violations. The procedural aspects in this area are presented into three parts of reporting cases of alleged violations of AI, the "judicial process" for adjudication of the reported cases, and the "appeal process."

Imposing Sanctions for Violations of AIP -- As specified in Academic Integrity Procedures, violations of AIP are punishable by one major sanction: dismissal from Abu Dhabi University, including “F” in the course where the violation has occurred and forced withdrawals in other courses taken in the concerned semester (or term). However, under special circumstances, lesser sanctions may be imposed subject to the discretion of the Academic Integrity Committee and/or Academic Integrity Appeal Committee. The lesser sanctions are listed below based on the degree of severity.

    • Failing grade in the course where the violation has occurred and suspension from Abu Dhabi University for one regular semester
    • Failing grade in the course where the violation has occurred
    • Failing grade in the component of the course where the violation has occurred
    • Warning

Imposition of any sanction is subject to completion of adjudication process of the case, based on the principle of “due process,” and after exhausting appeals. In cases of repeated AIP violations in more than one course in any semester, the most severe sanction permissible shall apply. Students with a pattern of behavior indicative of reckless disregard for AI and ethical standards are subject to dismissal from Abu Dhabi University.

  • Academic Integrity and the Responsibilities of Students

As members of Abu Dhabi University community, students bear substantial responsibility to uphold a culture of learning while adhering to the fundamental principles of ethics, honesty, and academic integrity. To that end, students are responsible to:

    • Understand Academic Integrity Policy (AIP) and its procedures
    • Report violations and suspected incidents of academic dishonesty - even relatively minor cases
    • Seek advice and support from the Office of Academic Integrity (OAI)
    • Access resources provided by OAI, faculty, and mentors at the Academic Success Center (ASC) in Abu Dhabi and AL AIN campuses
    • Request explanations or clarifications on any aspect of Abu Dhabi University Code of Honor and/or AIP, its provisions, and procedures
  • Academic Integrity and the Responsibilities of Faculty and Staff

Certain standards of conduct are expected of all Abu Dhabi University employees. These standards of conduct are consistent with the professional standards of Abu Dhabi University, the culture and values of the UAE, and the applicable laws. The responsibility of faculty and staff in the area of academic integrity is multifaceted. Both faculty and staff at Abu Dhabi University are expected to foster a climate of teaching, learning, research, and academic services in an environment enriched by the highest standard of ethical conduct. Faculty and staff are also expected to serve as the role models by conducting themselves beyond reproach. Specifically, they are to:

    • Uphold the Code of Honor
    • Support strategies for the successful implementation of Academic Integrity Policy (AIP)
    • Provide exemplary conduct in accordance with the highest standard of ethics
    • Explain to students the Academic Integrity Policy, its provisions, and the Code of Honor
    • Pay special attention to the violations of academic integrity such as cheating and plagiarism
    • Explain to students the expectations regarding examinations protocols and completing assignments
    • Conduct careful proctoring of examinations
    • Articulate the expectations of full-participation of students in any team assignments and/or team projects
    • Direct students to access resources provided by OAI and Colleges to ensure academic honesty
    • Report to OAI all violations and suspected incidents of academic dishonesty
  • Plagiarism

Plagiarism, by far, is the most common type of academic integrity violation. Technically, plagiarism is an “intentional theft of intellectual property,” and is subject to sanctions. The frequency of its occurrence (about 70% of all reported cases of violations) may indicate lack of understanding of the nature of the offense, as well as, lack of the element of “intent.” Plagiarism can often occur due to reasons, some of which are presented below (also see Handbook on Preventing and Detecting Plagiarism).

    • Believing that if the information is available in public domain (e.g., the Internet), there are no prohibitions regarding its use without acknowledgment
    • Lacking knowledge about the need to credit the sources of information
    • Lacking knowledge about proper methods of citation and referencing
    • Thinking copying the work of others is not an act of plagiarism
    • Wanting to get good grades (e.g., honor students or students with high GPAs are more likely to plagiarize than other students)
    • Believing that the act is “socially acceptable,” since others are doing the same”
    • Feeling that it will not be detected

The necessary condition to minimize plagiarism is accepting the truth about three fundamental facts of:

    • Having the responsibility and moral obligation to tell the reader or the instructors that the work submitted is not original
    • Concealing the sources of work is “lying” and in virtually all value systems “lying” is wrong and unacceptable
    • Submitting work of others as one’s own is “stealing” – stealing of “intellectual property”
  • APA Citation style

One of the reasons for plagiarism is poor practices in taking notes while researching a topic. Inability to take good notes may inadvertently result in copying from another person’s work without putting them in quotation marks. The result is plagiarism. Such inadvertent violation of AIP can be avoided by taking detailed notes, including the name of the author, name of the book or article, title of the article, year of publication, etc. The following four simple guidelines will minimize your exposure to the risk of plagiarism.

Interpretations of the Academic integrity Policy

To better understand the provisions of the Academic Integrity Policy, series of rules were formulated. These rules are operational interpretations of the provisions of Academic Integrity Policy at ADU which were distributed among the students in a leaflet. Accompanying the leaflet was the description of the method of referencing based on the American Psychological Association (APA) Style. Every student in Abu Dhabi University is expected to adhere to academic integrity rules and be in compliance with the APA style of referencing to avoid academic obstruction.

Rules governing outcome assessment (e.g., quizzes and exams)

    • Do not copy another student’s test answers during an exam
    • Do not exchange information regarding an exam during the exam
    • Do not copy answers from notes such as those written on the body, clothing, pieces of paper, or electronic devices such as mobile phones and/or calculators
    • Do not get a copy of or information about an examination ahead of time

    • Do not communicate with other students regarding the examination during the exam
    • Do not fail to submit your exam paper right after finishing the exam
    • Do not fail to switch off a mobile phone during the exam

Learning Support Center

The Learning Support Center (LSC) provides academic support to Abu Dhabi University students outside the classroom. The center assists students through two main types of activities “Peer Assisted Learning” and Abu Dhabi University's “Learning Community"

Peer Assisted Learning offers students outside class academic mentoring and tutorials outside of the class. The assistance is provided by peers with advanced academic standing, under the guidance of the LSC coordinator.

Academic Mentoring -- The goal of academic mentoring is to link students in need of academic assistance with their peers to provide them with support, advice, and guidance. Students with a record of academic accomplishments serving as academic mentors can offer course related information, test-taking tips, effective study strategies, and encouragement to students wanting to improve their GPAs. The assistance of academic mentors allows students to reach higher levels of academic excellence and earn their degrees with a stronger academic foundation.

Academic Tutoring --Tutoring sessions are led by upper-level students with excellent academic records. Tutors are academic role models who have excellent skills in written and verbal communication. Tutors are recommended by faculty members based on their technical knowledge, study skills, and academic performance. One-on-one or small group tutoring can be offered in a variety of subjects on request.

Academic mentoring and academic tutoring as delivered through Peer Assisted Learning enhance academic performance, increase student satisfaction with campus life, improve student skills in “learning how to learn,” assist “students at risk,” and increase student retention. The overall objective of Peer Assisted Learning is to enable students to excel academically through the assistance of peers with teaching/learning.

Courses Covered by Peer Assisted Learning

The Peer Assisted Learning is available to students in need of academic assistance in the following areas:

  • University College courses
  • The first two most challenging “introductory courses” in various undergraduate degree programs, as selected by respective colleges
  • Other courses, based on the needs of students and the availability of resources.

Abu Dhabi University's Learning Community promotes cooperative teaching/learning, both in and outside the classroom. It increases active participation of students in their education, sharpens the skills in “learning how to learn,” develops shared-knowledge amongst student peers, and enhances the campus life of students. The objective of the Learning Community is to enable academic excellence by providing students with the opportunity to learn from each other, both inside and outside the classroom.

Courses Covered by the Learning Community>

At present, the Learning Community covers only the courses offered by the University College. As time progresses, the scope will widen to include other courses in different degree programs.

LSC Infrastructure -- the LSC enjoys state-of-the-art physical facilities and equipment such as suitable furnishing for group discussions, laptops, PCs, wireless Internet connection, etc. The LSC has a full-time coordinator who oversees LSC activities and daily operations on both campuses and coordinates with faculty members in selecting, training, and retaining mentors and tutors, scheduling tutoring and mentoring sessions, and assessing the LSC’s effectiveness.

Success of LSC -- Since its inception a year and half ago, over 1,000 students have been assisted on each of the campuses. Periodic surveys of students demonstrate the LSC’s success in improving academic performance of students and students’ satisfaction. Over the past several years, concerted efforts have been underway to further improve the effectiveness of the LSC through achieving the following operating goals:

  • Enabling online collaboration among students attending the LSC;
  • Expanding the scope of activities of the LSC;
  • Increasing operating hours; and
  • Attracting more student mentors and students tutors.
