About our College of Engineering

In 2017 we opened a brand-new, purpose-built academic building expansion and we are very proud of our extensive laboratory infrastructure - among the best in the UAE - which spans more than an entire floor of the College. Each discipline has its own specialized lab facilities and the recent addition of our mechanical engineering research lab and bio-imaging lab gives us the edge.

Joint research projects between our experienced faculty and their international peers guarantee you will be taught by a professional team of engineers up-to-date with the latest advancements in their fields. The annual publication of university rankings by Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) ranks our faculty third globally in the international faculty indicator.

Disciplines

Electrical engineering is concerned with electrical and electronic devices and systems essential to contemporary life. It is a challenging and rapidly advancing field that has a significant impact on shaping modern societies.

Electrical Engineering includes electronic and computer systems, control and electrical power systems, and telecommunications. It is concerned with the way electrical energy is produced and used at homes, communities and the industry.

Electrical engineers design and build the systems and machines that generate, transmit, measure, control and use electrical energy. They work with various types of equipment ranging from heavy power generators to tiny computer chips and their work contributes to almost every sector of the society. For example, they may work on the design of telecommunication systems, the operation of electric power stations, the lighting and wiring of buildings, the design of household appliances or the electrical control of industrial machinery.

The B.Sc. in Electrical Engineering program at Abu Dhabi University is accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of ABET. The Electrical Engineering program at Abu Dhabi University has been developed according to the standards of international professional bodies such as the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineering (IEEE). This ensures that graduates of the program will be uniquely qualified to design, analyze, and test wide-ranging solutions for state-of-the art electrical and electronic systems.

Computer Engineering involves the design and analysis of computer hardware and software. Thus, computer engineers work with the hardware and software aspects of systems design and development. They usually apply the theories and principles of science and mathematics to design hardware, software, networks, and processes and to solve technical problems. Whereas their work emphasizes the application of theory, computer engineers are also involved in building prototypes. They often work as part of a team that designs new computing devices or computer-related equipment, systems, or software.

Computer hardware engineers usually design, develop, test, and supervise the manufacturing of computer hardware such as chips or device controllers. Software engineers, on the other hand, can be involved in the design and development of software systems for control and automation of manufacturing, business, and management processes. They may research, design, and test operating system software, compilers and network distribution software. They also analyze users’ needs and design, create, and modify general computer applications software or specialized utility programs. They must possess strong programming skills, but they are more concerned with analyzing and solving programming problems than with writing code for programs. Some software engineers develop both packaged and systems software or create customized software applications for clients.

The B.Sc. in Computer engineering program at Abu Dhabi University has been developed according to the standards of international professional bodies such as the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineering (IEEE), the Computer Society (IEEE-CS), the Association for Information Technology Professionals (AITP), and accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of ABET. This ensures that the graduates of the program will be uniquely qualified to design, analyze, and test wide-ranging solutions for state-of-the-art digital electronic and computer systems, and software applications.

Architecture is the art and science concerned with accommodating human activity within interior and exterior environments. It is concerned with the implementation of activities that shape the well-being of human settlements functionally as well as aesthetically. Architecture includes all types of buildings such as residential buildings, commercial, administrative, hospitality, entertainment, shopping malls, restaurants, theaters, airports and others. Working closely with engineers, construction managers, urban planners, interior designers and landscape architects, architects must identify all physical, physiological, psychological, and economical needs of different user groups using the building, prepare a program for the project to meet these needs, develop conceptual designs, conduct design development, prepare working drawings and contractual documents, and supervise the erection of buildings. This program offers courses in these topics which are an integral part of an undergraduate curriculum for an architect.

Both private companies and public agencies seek architects for a variety of professional positions. Many work for engineering and architecture consulting firms or construction companies as designers and project managers. Graduates are equally prepared to pursue M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees in allied fields of architecture and design.

The Department offers currently two undergraduate degrees: a 5 year Bachelor of Architecture and a 4 year B.Sc in Interior Design.  The architecture degree was designed to be recognized as a professional degree in most regions of the world including North America, Europe and all Arab countries. This will help our graduates become registered licensed architects in other countries, and prepare them to pursue M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees in fields of architecture and design.


Mechanical engineers deal with the design, construction and operation of machinery. It encompasses all engineering aspects of almost everything that moves in the universe such as cars, airplanes, hovercrafts, submarines, and space ships. Mechanical engineers help address and solve some of the world's most pressing important issues and problems such as energy, environment, robotics, advanced manufacturing, transportation on the ground, in the air, in and under water and in outer space. It is a major where both male and female students excel.

The B.Sc. in Mechanical Engineering program at Abu Dhabi University has been developed according to international standards. This ensures that graduates of the program will be uniquely qualified to design, analyze, and test wide-ranging solutions for state-of-the-art mechanical systems. The program provides Mechanical Engineering students with the opportunity to learn through a combination of conceptual and practical knowledge. This combination will enable the students to sharpen the skills of innovation and critical thinking and apply it to a variety of real mechanical engineering problems. Students also learn how to diagnose problems and develop a variety of solutions.

The program curriculum has been designed to provide a balanced education in the design, analysis and hands on experience. It is a challenging four-year curriculum that integrates courses in mathematics, physics and mechanical engineering to produce a professional engineer capable of designing and analyzing all aspects of modern mechanical systems. The program emphasizes a number of areas of technology including aerospace, thermal power, materials and manufacturing and mechatronics.


Chemical Engineering is the branch of engineering that deals with the conversion of raw materials to useful products and with energy by applying principles of science and engineering. It is concerned with the design, operation and maintenance of facilities which range from refineries, petrochemical and pharmaceutical plants to food and materials industries, and even nuclear-waste processing plants. Chemical Engineering is concerned with developing processes that are more efficient in terms of materials and energy usage, and which are environmentally friendly.

Chemical engineers have helped develop atomic science, polymers (plastics), paper, packaging, dyes, drugs, cosmetics, fertilizers, foods, textiles, water produced by desalination, and chemicals used in everyday life. They have plenty of job opportunities in the oil and gas industry, in petrochemicals industry, in food and drinking industry, water treatment and desalination plants, pharmaceutical and cosmetic industries, composite materials and polymers industry,  inorganic materials processing plants such as aluminum plants, power generation and in renewable energy  industry, nanotechnology, and many other industries.

The B.Sc. in Chemical Engineering program at Abu Dhabi University has been developed in response to the high demand for chemical engineers in the U.A.E. from the growing petrochemical, polymer, pharmaceutical, and food industries in the country, combined with the expansion in water desalination projects in the region. The program has been designed according to international standards. This ensures that graduates of the program will be uniquely qualified to design, analyze, and test wide-ranging solutions for state-of-the-art chemical engineering systems and processes. The program provides chemical engineering students with the opportunity to learn through a combination of theory and lab work. This mix of theory and laboratory work allows students to think things through and then apply their ideas in a variety of real life situations. Students also learn to diagnose problems and develop a variety of solutions. It is a challenging four-year curriculum that integrates courses in mathematics, chemistry, physics and chemical engineering to produce a professional engineer capable of designing and analyzing all aspects of modern chemical engineering systems. 


The Master of Project Management (MPM) program at Abu Dhabi University is offered by the College of Engineering (CoE) in collaboration with Purdue University, West Lafayette, USA. The program accepted the first cohort of students in Spring 2013.

The program is designed to be in line with the Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK) developed by the Project Management Institute (PMI: www.pmi.org). This prepares the students to take the exam of Project Management Professional (PMP) certification offered by the PMI and makes the program more attractive to professionals and engineers who plan to become certified Project Managers.

The Master of Engineering Management (MEM) program at Abu Dhabi University is offered by the College of Engineering (CoE) in collaboration with the College of Business(COB) and Purdue University Calumet. The program accepted the first cohort of students in Spring 2010. The program consists of 10 courses (30 credit hours), of which are engineering courses and 4 are business courses. The students could also do a thesis in lieu of 2 elective courses. The program accepts students with a Bachelor’s degree in engineering, computer science or IT.

Civil engineering is about the planning, design, construction and operation of facilities essential to modern life, ranging from bridges to transit systems. Civil engineers are problem solvers, meeting the challenges of community planning, water supply, structures, traffic congestion, energy needs, pollution, and infrastructure improvements. Societal needs, economic conditions and public safety are paramount in the work accomplished by civil engineers. Technologies related to computer aided design (CAD), geographical information systems (GIS) and 3-D computer modeling are a necessity in all areas of civil engineering.

Both private companies and public agencies seek civil engineers for a variety of professional positions. Many work for engineering consulting firms or construction companies as design engineers, field engineers and project managers. They also join government agencies to oversee transportation, water supply, environmental protection, and resource management. Graduates are equally prepared to pursue Master's and Ph.D. degrees in allied fields, as well as business, management and law degrees.


The Bachelor of Aviation Science program is designed to provide students with the opportunity to learn relevant aspects of aviation for those who want to become a professional pilot and also those who want to pursue their professional careers within operational sectors of the aviation industry. The degree offers study in a combination of theory and project work which allows students to apply multi-disciplinary thinking. Students also learn to analyze problems and develop their competence in problem solving, improve their communication and presentation skills and work in a multi-cultural environment.

The program, carefully designed and reviewed against similar programs in Australia, US and UAE, was started in 2011.  It has now seen the successful graduation of BSc Aviation students and also the graduation of the first students who entered into the Etihad Airways Flight Training Program after completion of the BSc program and are now flying as First Officers on modern commercial jet aircraft. Other graduates have obtained jobs in the aviation sector or gone on to take further qualifications in the field of aviation.

Currently the department offers the BSc Aviation as a 4 year program. The program is also offered as a shortened program recognizing credits for obtained previous professional competence and experience as an Airline Transport Pilot with a duration of 18 months.

Additionally, ADU offers a MBA with a concentration in Aviation.


Information Technology (IT) is concerned with studying various areas that are related to meeting users' needs in various activities of computing technology. The Information Technology (IT) program is designed to educate students about the current trends of IT that offer a better potential for employability.

Both private companies and public agencies seek IT professionals for a variety of computing positions. Many work as software designers, web application developers, network administrator and information system mangers for various growing sectors such as banks, hospitals, construction companies and telecommunication companies. Graduates are equally prepared to pursue Master's and Ph.D. degrees in IT or related fields.
