Overview

In line with the UAE’s strategy to foster sustainable architecture, this program incorporates the best international practices of environmental design and contemporary architecture.  It is a 30 credit hour program that will prepare you to research and develop innovative sustainable architectural solutions, provide you with an understanding of the latest environmental design trends and develop the research skills that are essential for sustainable design.

Covering the full range of issues associated with sustainable design, including energy consumption, materials and resources, different global environments and the health and well-being of end users, you will gain knowledge and skills that will enable you to take a leading role as a specialized practitioner and improve your professional profile.

Since the launch of the Abu Dhabi 2030 plan, the inauguration of Masdar city and the launch of the ‘Estidama’ guidelines, it is a great time to study sustainable design, preparing you for the UAE’s progressive city planning and development policies.

We graduated our first cohort of students in 2017 and the demand for practitioners skilled in sustainable design continues to grow.

“My passion for sustainable design spans two decades.”

“I joined ADU in 2010 after spending time in the USA and my native Egypt working in both private practice and academia. My passion for sustainable design spans two decades. Sustainable Architecture is a hot topic globally and, as a relatively new discipline in the UAE, the classroom is an extremely dynamic environment. Students bring brand-new, real-world issues to the table on a regular basis and we’re having a lot of fun exploring solutions together.

I instill the importance of critical thought and intellectual inquiry in my students. Taking a scientific research approach to solving architectural issues, rather than approaching the problem as a designer with an outcome already in mind, is key to the process.”

Tuition is based upon the College and/or Department classification as opposed to the course classification or level. Tuition rates for undergraduate students vary from the tuition rates for graduate students.

The tuition fee calculations are an example only and are based on the assumption that elective courses will be taken with the College that the student is taking their major with. However, if the student selects elective courses outside of this College, the total cost payable may increase or decrease to reflect the tuition rate of the College where the elective is delivered.

Costs of books and supplies are not included in the Tuition and Fees. Students at Abu Dhabi University are also required to pay certain fees and other costs to attend the University. Abu Dhabi University reserves the right to change tuition and fee rates at any time. A tuition schedule is published prior to registration for each semester.

For more information, please click here to view the University's tuition fee structure. Fees are subject to change during the year as per government charges and testing bodies.

Career opportunities

There has never been a better time to study sustainable architecture in the UAE and Abu Dhabi in particular. Its stunning city skyline boasts some of the tallest skyscrapers in the world and many of its innovative buildings push the limits of architectural imagination. As it continues to expand and compete with the likes of Hong Kong, Singapore and Tokyo, it provides a plethora of material to study and research, the perfect place to explore new forms and designs, with no limits on your creativity.

Both private companies and public agencies seek architects with a master’s degree for a variety of professional positions including architecture and consulting offices, construction companies, municipalities and the Urban Planning Council.

The acquisition of a master’s degree demonstrates a high level of knowledge in your chosen field. You may use it to enhance your employability, as preparation for further academic research or as a means of professional training.
