The United Arab Emirates has been a strong promoter for the construction of 2030 Agenda and there’s no denying that the country’s pledge to sustainable development is its key vision for the years to come.
Sustainable Development Goal 11 (SDG 11) aims to make cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient, and sustainable. In Abu Dhabi, the government is actively working towards creating a sustainable urban environment through a range of initiatives and strategic planning.
Urban Planning and Development: The Abu Dhabi government emphasizes sustainable urban planning, focusing on creating livable and integrated communities. The Abu Dhabi Urban Planning Council has developed the “Abu Dhabi Plan 2030,” which outlines strategies for sustainable urban development, land use, and infrastructure.
Smart City Initiatives: The government is investing in smart city technologies to enhance urban living. Initiatives such as the “Smart Abu Dhabi” program leverage digital technologies to improve public services, transportation, and energy efficiency, contributing to a more sustainable urban environment.
Sustainable Transport: Efforts to promote sustainable transportation include the expansion of public transport systems, such as buses and the future implementation of a metro system. Additionally, there are initiatives to encourage walking and cycling through the development of pedestrian-friendly spaces and bike lanes.
Green Building Standards: The government has established regulations for green building practices through the “Estidama” framework, which promotes sustainability in construction and operation of buildings. This includes energy-efficient designs, water conservation, and the use of sustainable materials.
Public Spaces and Community Engagement: The development of parks, green spaces, and recreational facilities is a priority. The government encourages community participation in urban planning to ensure that public spaces meet the needs of residents and promote social interaction.
Abu Dhabi University (ADU) actively contributes to SDG 11 through its educational programs, research initiatives, and community engagement efforts:
Academic Programs: ADU offers programs in architecture, engineering, and environmental science that emphasize sustainable urban development and planning. These programs equip students with the knowledge and skills to contribute to sustainable city initiatives.
Research on Urban Sustainability: Faculty and students engage in research projects focusing on sustainable cities, urban resilience, and environmental management. This research addresses local urban challenges and contributes to the global discourse on sustainable urban development.
Community Outreach and Workshops: ADU organizes community engagement activities and workshops aimed at raising awareness about sustainable living and urban planning. These initiatives encourage residents to adopt sustainable practices in their daily lives.
Collaboration with Government and NGOs: The university collaborates with local government entities and non-governmental organizations to support initiatives related to sustainable urban development. These partnerships enhance the impact of both academic and community efforts.
Sustainability Practices on Campus: ADU implements sustainable practices within its own facilities, including energy-efficient systems, water conservation measures, and recycling programs. This commitment to sustainability serves as a model for students and the wider community.
In summary, both the Abu Dhabi government and Abu Dhabi University are dedicated to achieving SDG 11 by fostering sustainable cities and communities. Through strategic urban planning, investment in smart technologies, educational initiatives, and community engagement, they are addressing the challenges of urbanization and sustainability. This collaborative approach is crucial for building a resilient and inclusive urban environment that enhances the quality of life for all residents in Abu Dhabi.

The Department of Architecture and Design at Abu Dhabi University (ADU) organized its first-ever international urban planning conference under the theme ‘Constructing an urban future: the sustainability and resilience of cities including infrastructure, communities, and architecture’.
The two-day conference was headlined by frontline speakers including Eike Sindlinger, Associate at Arup’s Integrated City Planning Unit in London and Professor Shams Eldien Naga, Founder of Naga Architects, headquartered in Dubai. Drawing the participation of researchers, practitioners, from government, architects, and designers as well as ADU’s students and faculty, the event addressed some of the common challenges surrounding urban planning in an era of migration and displacement of populations, rapid urbanization and dramatic surges in the global population.
Speaking on the occasion, Mohammad Elkaftangui, Assistant Professor, Architecture and Interior Design at Abu Dhabi University, said: “The two-day conference highlights some of the key global challenges faced by people in urban environments such as population growth, urban sprawl, pollution, and congestion. The experts outlined that a multi-sectoral approach needs to be implemented in achieving the priority areas of urban planning – buildings, urban mobility with reliable and affordable public transportation, clean energy generation from local sources, waste management resource recovery, among others.
“This event has been a revelation to our students and served as a platform for the experts and stakeholders to network and share best practices and stay up to date with new developments in the field. Our students have benefitted considerably from this learning experience outside the classrooms. Events such as this one allows them to understand the real-life challenges in this dynamic sector.”
The 2014 edition of the United Nations’ World Urbanization Prospects report stated that by 2050, 66 percent of the world’s population will live in urban environments. Already in that year, some 54 percent of the global population lived in cities.
