During the competition, students competed to develop the best computer vision and AI control techniques to fly a drone safely in an autonomous indoor mission using cluttered ground patterns for navigation. The COE teams excelled in the competition's simulator and physical rounds and won 𝗳𝗶𝗿𝘀𝘁 𝗽𝗹𝗮𝗰𝗲!

Under the supervision of Prof. Mohammed Ghazal and Eng. Marah Alhalabi, both teams showcased their expertise among 33 participating teams. This achievement is a testament to our students' and their supervisors' hard work and dedication. Many thanks to ADU leadership for supporting students' co-curricular activities and robotics inventions, starting with our chancellor, Prof. Ghassan Aouad, and the College Dean, Dr. Hamdi Mustafa Sheibani. Abu Dhabi University was the only university nominated from the UAE by the Association of Arab Universities for the "10+10” cooperation between Chinese and Arab Universities initiative, announced during the First International Conference on "Universities and Artificial Intelligence Technology" held on June 24-25 in Amman, Jordan. The initiative aims to establish 10 university cooperation groups to foster exchange and development in 10 major fields of Chinese-Arab higher education.

Abu Dhabi University's designated area of focus is "Economic, Trade, and Investment," partnering with the University of International Business and Economics. The signing ceremony was attended by H.E. Chen Chuandong, the Chinese Ambassador to Jordan, Prof. Amr Ezzat Salama, Secretary-General of the Association of Arab Universities (AArU), and Prof. Yan Chunhua, Vice Chairman of the China-Arab Higher Education.

ADU Ranks Among the Top 200 Universities Globally in Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2025

Abu Dhabi University (ADU) has advanced 60 places in the Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings 2025, securing the 191st position globally, placing it among the top 200 universities on the global stage. ADU has marked its position as a leading university out of 2,092 higher education institutions, in recognition of its academic excellence and commitment to research.

In this year's rankings, ADU achieved remarkable success in the ‘International Outlook’ pillar, ranking 13th globally. The university scored 100 points in both ‘International Staff’ and ‘International Students’, reinforcing its commitment to global collaboration and campus diversity. The recognition in this area further cements its position as a regional academic hub for international talent.

Furthermore, the university has progressed across 12 metrics, including ‘Research Productivity,’ ‘Research Reputation,’ and ‘Research Excellence’, highlighting its ongoing efforts to foster a robust research environment that contributes to the UAE’s knowledge-based economy and global developments.

ADU also improved its ranking in the ‘Research Quality’ pillar by 20 places, ranking 172nd globally, reflecting the increasing recognition of the university’s research quality by the global academic community, and solidifying its growing impact as a hub for innovation and advanced research.

Abu Dhabi University (ADU) hosted the ‘International Conference on Education: Pioneering Education’s Future’ in efforts to shape the future of education for UAE students and beyond through a hybrid conference in Al Ain, UAE from 2-3 October 2024.

The conference, under the theme ‘Innovations in Teaching & Learning: Charting Higher Education’s Path Forward’, was organized by ADU in partnership with the Regional Center for Educational Planning, UNESCO (RCEP-UNESCO), Liwa College, Quality Matters (QM), University of Florida (UF), Queen Rania Teaching Academy (QRTA), and Drexel University School of Education. The conference received 250 papers from 25 countries around the world with 125 papers presented both physically and virtually during the conference.

The event brought together leading academic professionals, researchers, and practitioners to showcase innovative teaching approaches and address pressing challenges in the global academic context. The diverse panel of expert speakers also highlighted the importance of both cross-border and inter-field collaboration in curriculums to offer students a more comprehensive academic foundation that will better serve the needs of the increasingly globalized and interconnected economy of the future. Additionally, the conference featured ChatGPT as a panelist in a session titled “AI and Education: Revolutionizing Pedagogies and Empowering Learners,” highlighting the growing role of AI in improving education, student success and engagement.

ADU to Host the ‘International Conference on Advancing Sustainable Futures 2023’ in Collaboration with National and International Organizations

In the presence and under the patronage of H.E. Sheikh Nahayan Mabarak Al Nahayan, Cabinet Member and Minister of Tolerance and Coexistence, Abu Dhabi University (ADU) is hosting the ‘International Conference on Advancing Sustainable Futures’ (ICASF 2023) under the theme of ‘Sustainable Futures and Technologies’. The Conference is in collaboration with the World Health Organization, the International Society of Environmental Geotechnology, and leading universities worldwide and sponsored by Emirates Red Crescent, Emirates Global Aluminum, and Adeeb Group.

The ICASF 2023 will take place from the 5th to the 6th of December 2023 at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel, Dubai Palm Jumeirah in the presence of several academics and industry experts from over 70 countries.

The ICASF 2023 will serve as a platform for international researchers and specialists to engage in the most pressing challenge and discuss and share their latest research findings in the field of sustainability. Additionally, the Conference will address the four sustainability pillars in line with the United Nations 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) including technology, people and culture, environment, and economics.

The Conference will feature six tracks, including 34 sessions discussing 210 research papers accepted out of 350 submissions, which will shed light on sustainability and the environment. These sessions will focus on topics such as Business Management Sustainability and Law, Sustainability and Education, Sustainability in Health, Food, and Social Science and Future Researchers, as well as Science and Engineering Sustainability.

Additionally, three special sessions will take place during the Conference including the Education for Sustainable Development: What, Why, and How and ICASF 2023 - Indexed Scopus Proceedings and Publications and The Need for Accelerating Transformative Change in Cities and Communities: The Crucial Role Played by Universities. In addition to two panel discussions including the Leaders of Sustainable Futures: Lessons from Industry Eco-Champions and the Role of ESG Metrics in Accounting and Finance; Measuring Impact Beyond Profit.

UI GreenMetric Rankings evaluates universities based on three core pillars—environmental, economic, and social value. The assessment indicators cover a broad spectrum, including campus infrastructure, energy and climate initiatives, waste management strategies, water conservation efforts, transportation systems, and the institution's commitment to education and research.

ADU’s College of Business will host the Adam Smith 300 Year Celebrations event during the conference in collaboration with the University of Glasgow. In addition, the ADU Research Institute for Sustainable Future will be announced at the Conference.

In line with the University’s dedication to raising awareness around climate change and sustainability, ADU will host seven panel discussions in the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP28). The panels will take place from the 1st to the 11th of December 2023 at Expo City Dubai, in the Green Zone, with a focus on students’ empowerment to enroll actively in climate change, renewable energy, clean water, and many more.

ADU Launches Pioneering Academic Initiatives to Promote Sustainability in the UAE and Beyond

In line with the UAE’s Year of Sustainability and the directives of His Highness President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Abu Dhabi University (ADU) launched an integrated system of academic and community initiatives, aimed at fulfilling the UAE’s directions and vision to host the 28th United Nations Conference of the Parties (COP28) Climate Change Conference.

These initiatives are launched and organized in collaboration with ADU’s strategic partners in the UAE and the support of its students and faculty members. The main aim of these initiatives is to promote sustainability awareness, address environmental concerns, and develop procedures for conserving natural resources and wildlife.

ADU collaborates with prestigious environmental organizations annually to develop and implement effective solutions for environmental challenges, aligning with the UAE's climate change strategy to achieve net-zero carbon emissions while adhering to international best practices.

Dr. Ali Saeed Bin Harmal Aldhaheri, Chairman of ADU, stressed that over the past 20 years, ADU has dedicated its efforts to protecting the environment and shaping the future of climate action. In line with its commitment, the University has launched several academic programs to equip its students and prepare them to excel in environmental and sustainability work. Additionally, ADU has employed expert faculty members and researchers to actively engage the community in fostering awareness and understanding in the environmental field.

These programs include ADU’s certified program titled ‘COP28 Ready: Leading the Way to Sustainability,’ which is taking place throughout the month of November. The program is open to high school and undergraduate university students and aims to enhance student’s knowledge and provide them with the necessary tools to understand and embrace several aspects of sustainability, including green jobs, COP28, and many more.

Additionally, under the patronage of His Excellency Sheikh Nahayan Bin Mabarak Al Nahyan, Minister of Tolerance and Coexistence, ADU will host the ‘International Conference on Advancing Sustainable Futures (ICASF 2023), which will take place between December 5th and 6th, 2023, at the Waldorf Astoria hotel, Dubai. The conference will run in parallel with several workshops and sessions that will delve into sustainability related topics.

ADU is also participating in the 18th United Nations Climate Change Conference of Youth (COY18). During the conference, Professor Sherin Farouk, Associate Provost for Academic Projects and Head of the Sustainability Club at ADU, will present a session titled 'Sustainable Innovation, Entrepreneurship, and Sustainable Management Practices' on November 27th, 2023, at Expo City, Dubai. Additionally, Sven Ivak, a student from ADU's College of Engineering, will participate in the conference for his outstanding contributions to addressing climate change.

Lastly, ADU has introduced a certificate for professional development in the field of sustainability titled ‘Professional Certificate to Empower Teachers for Sustainable Learning,’ which is starting during November 2023. This certificate program includes four sessions designed to equip school principals and educational leaders with the knowledge and tools required to lead their schools toward a sustainable future.

Dr. Ali explained that ADU is honored to be part of the Universities Climate Network (UCN), which includes universities and higher education institutions in the UAE that will work together to drive engagement among youth and academia in the lead up to COP28.

Along with COP28, several faculty and researchers at the University have submitted research proposals to the Green Education Center, with the aim of strengthening the educational sector’s capacity to effectively respond to environmental crises.

In line with ADU’s commitment to advancing sustainability research, faculty members and researchers at the University have made significant contributions by publishing a great number of research papers in many prestigious international journals which were presented at international conferences.

In line with its commitment to fostering a sustainable future in the educational sector, Abu Dhabi University's (ADU) Chairman, Dr. Ali Saeed Bin Harmal Al Dhaheri, announced strategic partnerships on the sidelines of the ‘International Conference on Advancing Sustainable Futures 2023’ which took place in Dubai on the 5th and 6th of December 2023.

Among the five MoUs, the University partnered with Sapient Consulting Group Limited and the UAE Trade Center. This MoU aims to establish the Africa Policy Center in the UAE, which will serve as a dynamic platform for research, policy advocacy and strategic engagement. The center will facilitate joint research initiatives, involving ADU’s students and faculty as well as African universities and relevant stakeholders.

Furthermore, ADU signed four additional MoUs with five prestigious international partners. These partners include MAIRE S.p.A, an Italian technology and engineering group, the University of Technology Sydney (UTS), and McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada. In addition, ADU signed a collaboration between the University of São Paulo and the Arab Brazilian Chamber of Commerce in Brazil.

The agreements seek to offer students and the wider community with access to cutting-edge sustainable solutions, foster academic research, facilitate knowledge exchange and promote innovation.

Dr. Ali Saeed Bin Harmal Al Dhaheri, Chairman of ADU, Professor Alexander Ezenagu, Founder and Chief Consultant at Sapient Consulting Group, and Mr. Walid Hareb Al Falahi, CEO of the UAE Trade Center, signed the MoU during the ICASF 2023, in the presence of ADU's leaders and partners.

The MoU was signed by Professor Ghassan Aouad, ADU Chancellor, and Mr. Niccoló Heilpern, Region Vice President of MAIRE S.p.A., in the presence of H.E. Mr. Lorenzo Fanara, Ambassador of the Republic of Italy in the UAE. Through this MoU, both entities will work hand-in-hand to establish and strengthen international partnerships in research and academics. This collaboration aims to provide students with valuable industry exposure and create impactful opportunities for professional growth.

Prof. Ghassan Aouad, ADU Chancellor, and Dr. Bonny Ibhawoh, Vice-Provost, International Affairs at McMaster University, participated in the MoU signing. In line with Abu Dhabi University's (ADU)commitment to academic excellence, ADU hosted the first Times Higher Education (THE) MENA Reputation Forum, which was held on the 13th of February 2024 at its Al Ain campus. In the participation and attendance of 200 representatives of over 75 institutions from 20 countries in the MENA region and beyond, the Forum delved into the importance of building and maintaining an institute's academic reputation within a global context.

The two-day Forum focused on explaining the connection between reputation and rankings within the context of higher education, offering valuable insights into creating and solidifying universities' brands in a constantly evolving landscape.

During the Forum, Professor Ghassan Aouad, Chancellor of ADU delivered the opening remarks welcoming participants and highlighted the significant elements that have enhanced the institutional reputation of ADU. Furthermore, Prof. Robin Mason, Pro-vice-chancellor (International) at the University of Brimingham and Dr. Yusra Mouzughi, Provost, of the University of Birmingham Dubai, led the opening session titled 'Why reputation matters,' that was moderated by Prof. Sherine Farouk, Associate Provost for Academic Projects and Internationalization at ADU.

Thought leaders from the educational sector in the MENA region and beyond contributed to the Forum, including representatives from regional and international universities and institutions. The Forum also witnessed the participation of representatives from the Ministry of Education and Accenture Middle East as well as keynote speakers including Mark Caddow, Data Scientist at THE, and Nick Davis, President of THE in the Middle East and Africa.

In addition, Prof. Ghassan along with international speakers discussed leadership reflections during the 'Sustainability as a marker for reputation' and 'Positioning reputation in institutional strategy' session. The session was moderated by Mr. Mark Sudbury, Head of Reputation at THE. Furthermore, Dr. Hamad Odhabi, Vice Chancellor for Financial and Administrative Affairs at ADU partook in a session titled leadership reflections: Measuring the value of mobility networks and partnerships.

Inovartic Investment, a leading technology innovation company, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Abu Dhabi University (ADU) to foster collaboration in cybersecurity, Artificial Intelligence (AI), and advanced materials, mainly graphene. The partnership also aims to enhance training programs and facilitate the exchange of expertise between the two entities in the technological landscape.

The signing ceremony was attended by Mr. Salem Al Dhaheri, Executive Director of Community Relations at ADU. Abu Dhabi University (ADU) in collaboration with The Gulf Standardization Organization (GSO) and The AdWisers, hosted a Symposium under the theme ‘From Excellence to Impact: Standardization, Research, Innovation and Quality Education’. The symposium delivered a vibrant, enriching and valuable learning experience for students focused on research and innovation.

Abu Dhabi University hosted the symposium on the 23rd of October 2023 at the H Hotel in Dubai. The symposium featured two sessions. The first session is titled ‘A truly competitive and integrated ecosystem’, and the second session, ‘Drivers for global success.’

The event witnessed the participation of a wide group of subject matter experts and leaders from renowned organizations such as the Chief Executive Officer of The AdWisers, Chairman GCC – Standardization Organization, ADU and the European Commission. In addition to CEN-CENELEC, the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), University of Tunis El-Manar – National School of Engineering and Green Climate Fund.

The speakers shared their expertise, stimulated challenging analysis, and started thought-provoking reflections that showcased and demonstrated the advantages of a more integrated nexus of Standardization-Research-Innovation (SRI), along with quality education. Speakers presented their views on the most fascinating dynamics shaping our world, by combining different perspectives, international trends, and remarkable case studies.

Professor Montasir Qasymeh, Associate Provost for Research and Academic Development at ADU, said: “We are delighted to host the symposium along with our strategic partners GSO and AdWisers, who are as committed as ADU in fostering research and innovation among students and the wider community. Abu Dhabi University (ADU) recognized the winners of the regional Undergraduate Research Competition, now in its seventh year, at an awards ceremony held under the patronage of His Excellency Hussain bin Ibrahim Al Hammadi, Minister of Education.

Organized with the ADNOC Group as a strategic partner, the awards ceremony, which took place at the University’s main campus in Abu Dhabi, acknowledged over 261 shortlisted submissions from local and regional academic institutions.

In this edition, the competition saw the participation of prestigious universities from Saudi Arabia and Oman, with three universities from Saudi Arabia presenting 34 research works and eight universities from Oman presenting 12 research projects. 

The university awarded more than 34 winning teams from 17 universities in the UAE, Saudi and Oman. The winners comprised 6 winners from University of Sharjah, 6 students from Abu Dhabi University, 3 Khalifa University, 2 American University of Sharjah, 2 University Arab Emirates University, 2 King Saud University, 2 Al Ain University of Science and Technology, 2 University of Wollonong in Dubai, 1 New York University Abu Dhabi (NYUAD), 1 Sultan Qaboos University, 1 Dhofar University, 1 Gulf Medical University, 1 Birla Institute of Technology and Science, 1 Rochester Institute of Technology - Dubai, 1 Zayed University, 1 Canadian University Dubai, 1 Middlesex University Dubai.

This year’s submissions covered a diverse range of fields including engineering, business administration, arts and social sciences, education and law, and natural and health sciences. To enhance the relevance to the UAE, two new categories were introduced this year: Tolerance and Innovation. The former is in line with the UAE’s theme of 2019 as the Year of Tolerance and its values of acceptance and co-existence, and the latter seeks to encourage and inspire creative thinking, artificial intelligence, and digitalization, all of which are key pillars in the UAE’s economic plan.

Professor Ashraf Khalil, ADU Director of Research and organizer of the annual competition, said, “ADU prioritizes research opportunities for its community with URC being one of our most important competitions and the region’s leading research event for undergraduates. This competition opens up research opportunities in all areas of studies and we have further expanded the research categories for this year’s edition with 15 different discplines to engage more undergraduate students. Undergraduate students from across the GCC presented their research findings to a panel of expert judges, with 34 winning teams receiving prizes worth over AED 120,000. 

Participation has grown rapidly since the competition’s inception, with the number of submissions more than doubling from last year.

ADU demonstrated the extent of its research efforts earlier this year when it reached 1,000 scientific papers listed in the Scopus Index, a world-renowned database of high-quality research. This makes ADU the nation’s top private academic institution in terms of quality research output.

ADU held its ninth annual Undergraduate Research Competition (URC) and awards ceremony. The URC provides an opportunity for students to transform their creative ideas into research and innovation projects to support the development of their 21st century skills to produce the researchers, innovators and entrepreneurs of the future for the UAE’s knowledge economy. ADU’s URC is the largest undergraduate research event in the GCC and MENA region that encompasses all major programs and serves as a platform that allows universities to showcase their undergraduate research. The competition is sponsored by ExxonMobil, one of the world’s largest publicly traded energy providers and chemical manufacturers.

This year’s competition witnessed its highest number of submissions received from 320 research teams which included 813 students supported by 367 mentors from 53 universities across 10 countries including GCC countries and beyond. Teams were also given the opportunity to submit their research projects to be included in the ‘Launchpad Start-Up’ program in collaboration with ADU Innovation strategy (ADUi) which serves as an engine for the advancement of innovation and entrepreneurship education in the UAE by supporting the incubation of university enterprises. For selected projects, the Launchpad Start-Up program nurtures a pipeline of university start-up and spin-out businesses by providing support including mentoring and funding to transform their promising projects into commercial enterprises.

During the competition 10 teams from Abu Dhabi University and 60 teams from other universities were awarded prizes across 27 categories for their outstanding research, with three teams granted Launchpad Start-up Initiative Awards.

Through URC, ADU enables young researchers to explore methods that extend their knowledge and improve their critical and analytical thinking by presenting their projects to a panel of judges from various universities and industries. As an integral part of ADU’s vision, the university aims to strengthen students’ confidence and research abilities by giving them the space to transform their projects into innovative business ideas, while exploring new frontiers in their fields of study and preparing them for graduate level studies.

(MOCD) as the first law to provide social benefits to members of the community to ensure and sustain the high quality of living for all UAE citizens. The Ministry continues to work today on enhancing social inclusion for all members of society where social benefits are extended to cover twenty-one segments of the community.

The UAE government has a future vision to change the culture of social support from the current ‘social welfare’ model to ‘sustainable social development’ that encourages independence and growth of families across the UAE.

ADU is determined to overcome all challenges that ADU and our students might face as a result of the poverty. Emirates Red Crescent and ADU Launch a Humanitarian Funding Campaign

Emirates Red Crescent and Abu Dhabi University recently launched the Education Support Campaign in coordination with Abu Dhabi Cooperative Society and Lulu Group International. Through this collaboration, ADU and Emirates Red Crescent will support disadvantaged students in their university studies, providing them with an opportunity for a successful educational journey. The campaign aims to raise 10 million dirhams, and students will benefit from these funds starting 24 November 2021 and for one year. (This activity is licensed by the Department of Community Development – Abu Dhabi, permit number 022).

Abu Dhabi Cooperative Society and Lulu Group International will aid the campaign by facilitating donations through their different points of sale. Community members will show their solidarity by donating valuable aid to students, starting at two dirhams.

Public donations will be accepted via text message through Etisalat and Du. Bank donations can be sent to Sharjah Islamic Bank - account number (11445518006), IBAN (AE350410000011445518006). Individuals can also donate through the link provided on the Emirates Red Crescent website (https://www.emiratesrc.ae/eduadu), with the donations ranging from ten dirhams to 1,000 dirhams.

Salem Al Rayes Al Ameri, Deputy Secretary-General for Local Affairs at Emirates Red Crescent, said, "Sponsoring students is one of the permanent and continuous programs within the initiatives of the Humanitarian and Development Authority. We continue to witness a high rate of response and generosity from sponsors and benefactors.
