Professor in Aerospace Engineering Department in UPM
Ir. Dr. Hj. Kamarul Arifin Ahmad is currently the Professor in Aerospace Engineering Department in UPM. Prof. Kamarul has Bachelor degree from Universiti Sains Malaysia, MSc. in Aerodynamics (Aerospace Dynamics) from Cranfield University and Doctorate from Queens University of Belfast.
In 2015, he obtained his Professional Engineer (PE) status from Board of Engineers Malaysia (BEM). Between 2016 and 2018, he was seconded to King Saud University, Saudi Arabia in the Department of Mechanical Engineering. He is also former Head of the Aerospace Malaysia Research Centre (AMRC) UPM and the head of the Aerospace Engineering Department in UPM. He has vast experiences in the Aerospace Engineering field and has been teaching in the same area for more than 20 years. He has teaching experience in different environment such as in Queens University in Belfast, USM, UPM and also in KSU Saudi Arabia. He was appointed as an External Assessor for UTHM, UTM, and UPNM.
Research wise, he has successfully completed more than RM 2.5 million worth of research grants. To date, he has authored or co-authored more than 250 journals and conference proceedings. He is an editorial board member for several journals namely ASEAN Engineering Journal and Aircraft and Spacecraft Journal, CFD Letters, and King Saud University – Engineering Sciences. He has successfully supervised 20 PhD as main supervisor and co-supervisor. He is the co-founder and co-chairman of the International Conference of Computational in Engineering and Health Sciences (ICCMEH). This conference is an annual event where it is jointly organised by UPM, Manipal University, India and Kyutech Institute of Technology (KIT) Japan. He invented more than 5 innovations products which include 3 patents and one of his innovations has been successfully commercialized. He is also the founder for one of the UPM start-up companies. He had been the Director of the UPM IP office (Putra Science Park) since 2022 and has been aggressively promoting the UPM IPs to the industry and communities. He completed his tenure in the UPM IP office in 31th March 2024. Currently he is leading a working committee to prepare a 10-year Blueprint for the Higher Education of Malaysia.
