SDG 10

Reduced Inequalities

Abu Dhabi is home to around 20,000 People of Determination (POD ), both nationals and residents. Neurodevelopmental disorders such as autism spectrum disorders, intellectual disability, and specific learning disorders are among the most common disabilities in the emirate.

Sustainable Development Goal 10: Reduced Inequalities in Abu Dhabi

Sustainable Development Goal 10 (SDG 10) aims to reduce inequality within and among countries, focusing on promoting the social, economic, and political inclusion of all individuals, regardless of their background. In Abu Dhabi, the government is actively addressing inequalities, particularly concerning underrepresented groups, including people of determination (individuals with disabilities).

Government Initiatives for Reducing Inequalities

Legislative Framework: The Abu Dhabi government has established laws and policies to protect the rights of people of determination. The UAE’s Federal Law No. 29 of 2006 on the Rights of People of Determination ensures their inclusion in various aspects of society, including education, employment, and accessibility.

Inclusive Policies: The government promotes inclusive policies aimed at integrating people of determination into the workforce. Initiatives encourage businesses to hire individuals with disabilities and provide necessary accommodations to support their employment.

Public Awareness Campaigns: Awareness campaigns are conducted to educate the public about the capabilities and rights of people of determination. These initiatives aim to change societal perceptions and promote acceptance and inclusion.

Accessibility Improvements: The government has invested in enhancing physical accessibility in public spaces, transport systems, and buildings. This includes the implementation of universal design principles to ensure that environments are accessible to everyone.

Social Services and Support Programs: Various programs provide support services for people of determination, including rehabilitation, training, and educational support. The government works with non-profit organizations to deliver these services effectively.

Abu Dhabi University’s Role in Supporting Underrepresented Groups

Abu Dhabi University (ADU) is dedicated to advancing SDG 10 through its commitment to inclusivity and support for underrepresented groups:

Inclusive Educational Programs: ADU offers a range of programs designed to accommodate diverse learning needs. This includes support for students with disabilities through tailored learning resources and assistance.

Awareness and Sensitivity Training: The university conducts training programs for staff and students to raise awareness about the challenges faced by underrepresented groups, including people of determination. This promotes a culture of inclusivity on campus.

Support Services: ADU provides various support services, including academic advising, counseling, and mentorship programs specifically designed for students from underrepresented backgrounds. These services help ensure that all students have the resources they need to succeed.

Collaboration with Community Organizations: The university collaborates with local organizations and government bodies to enhance support for underrepresented groups. This partnership approach facilitates the sharing of resources and expertise to improve access and inclusion.

Research and Advocacy: Faculty and students at ADU engage in research focused on issues related to inequality and inclusion. This research contributes to a deeper understanding of the challenges faced by underrepresented groups and helps inform policies and practices.

Conclusion

In summary, both the Abu Dhabi government and Abu Dhabi University are committed to achieving SDG 10 by addressing inequalities and supporting underrepresented groups, particularly people of determination. Through legislative measures, inclusive policies, educational initiatives, and community engagement, they are working towards a more equitable society. This collaborative effort is essential for fostering an inclusive environment where all individuals can thrive and contribute to the development of the emirate.

D1Cart is supported by a robotic arm and a lifting mechanism controlled by a remote joystick to help people of determination reach items on high shelves effortlessly. The control system is adjusted to accurate and precise factors including speed, sensitivity, and reliability, as well as incorporating the maximum workspace to provide an easy and simple manual controlling. D1Cart is also supported by an automated scanning system to provide comfort and convenience to enable people of determination to avoid cashier lines. This integrated system helps limit interaction with store staff and shoppers, which in turn contributes to the precautionary and safety measures taken to avoid COVID-19 transmission.

D1Cart was designed by Abdullah Said Gad, Abdalla Eslam Rashed, Saeed Darwish Alkhemeiri, and Gasm Elbary Mohamed, all Electrical and Computer Engineering students, along with the support of Dr. Mohammed Ghazal, Professor and Chair of the Electrical and Computer Engineering department at ADU, and Dr. Mohammad Alkheder, Chair and Associate Professor of Mechanical Engineering. The students worked hard to design and implement the D1Cart over several months and will continue to use their skills to come up with further innovative ideas to develop the product for the benefit of the community.

The campaign aligns with Abu Dhabi University's mission to support students and allows us to share social responsibilities with the community. We are proud of the continuous cooperation and renewed partnership with Emirates Red Crescent in launching campaigns that carry a noble message and achieve a tangible and real impact on our society."

Al Dhaheri added, "Abu Dhabi University appreciates the role of the Abu Dhabi Cooperative Society, Lulu International Group, and all participating partners in supporting the campaign activities. Investing in our young people and building an educated generation capable of leading the continued development of our country is vital."

Abdul Majeed Al Khouri, the Executive Director of the Abu Dhabi Cooperative Society, commented, "Our participation in the Education Support Campaign confirms the depth of the decades-old relationship between the Abu Dhabi Cooperative Society and Emirates Red Crescent. With God's grace, it has gone beyond humanitarian work and now encompasses sustainability. We are proud of this pioneering partnership. The Abu Dhabi Cooperative Society has always sought to serve the community of the UAE and we continuously contribute to helping and supporting various sectors in Abu Dhabi and the other Emirates."

Al Khoori added, "The initiatives adopted by the Abu Dhabi Cooperative Society reflect our passion towards aiding societal struggles related to education. Abu Dhabi Cooperative Society has initiated partnerships with ministries and governmental institutions, such as the Ministry of Social Affairs and the Emirates Red Crescent, to create opportunities for those who dream of pursuing their educational journey. In the last few years, we doubled our efforts and developed initiatives that will allow us to serve our country and consolidate the concept of social responsibility. We are proud to be part of an institution that provides its students with an environment that values charitable work and social development while simultaneously providing high-quality education and academic qualifications that are respected worldwide."

Mr. Aboobakker TP, Director of LuLu Hypermarkets Abu Dhabi and Al Dhafra region, said, "This initiative embodies the belief and commitment of LuLu Group in the bright future of the UAE and the power of the Emirati youth to shape it."

"Education is one of the strongest building blocks for a nation's future, and LuLu Group is honored to share in raising valuable funding for needy students," he continued. "It empowers Emirati youth to contribute to their best potential and lead the future of the country. It is particularly timely that this campaign comes on the eve of the 50th anniversary of the UAE's nationhood. We at LuLu Group International are proud of our identity as a 'homegrown' UAE brand and see this participation in the 'Let's Support Their Future' campaign as our humble contribution to the nation that gave us so much to build upon."
