SDG 2

Zero Hunger

Food security has been defined by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (the ‘FOA’) as “all people, at all times, have physical, social, and economic access to sufficient, safe and nutritious food that meets their food preferences and dietary needs for an active and healthy life”.

Sustainable Development Goal 2: Zero Hunger in Abu Dhabi

Sustainable Development Goal 2 (SDG 2) aims to end hunger, achieve food security and improved nutrition, and promote sustainable agriculture by 2030. In Abu Dhabi, the government is actively addressing food security challenges through a variety of initiatives and policies.

Government Initiatives for Food Security

Food Security Strategy: The Abu Dhabi government has developed a comprehensive Food Security Strategy aimed at ensuring that all residents have access to sufficient, safe, and nutritious food. This strategy encompasses various sectors, including agriculture, logistics, and distribution, to create a resilient food system.

Investment in Agriculture: To promote local food production, the government is investing in advanced agricultural technologies, such as hydroponics and vertical farming. These initiatives not only enhance food self-sufficiency but also reduce reliance on food imports, which is crucial for enhancing food security.

Supply Chain Management: The government is focused on improving the food supply chain through better logistics and distribution networks. This includes partnerships with private sector stakeholders to ensure efficient transportation and storage of food, reducing waste and enhancing access.

Nutrition Programs: Various programs aimed at promoting healthy eating habits and nutrition awareness are being implemented. These initiatives target vulnerable populations, ensuring that nutritional education is accessible to all segments of society.

Collaboration and Research: The government collaborates with academic institutions and research organizations to develop innovative solutions to food security challenges. This includes research on sustainable agricultural practices and food systems.

Abu Dhabi University’s Role in Addressing SDG 2

Abu Dhabi University (ADU) is also contributing to the goals of SDG 2 through its educational and community-oriented initiatives:

Educational Programs: ADU offers programs related to food security, agriculture, and sustainable development. By equipping students with the necessary knowledge and skills, the university prepares future leaders to tackle food security challenges effectively.

Research Initiatives: ADU engages in research projects focused on sustainable agriculture and food systems. Faculty and students are involved in exploring innovative agricultural practices that can be applied locally to enhance food production and security.

Community Outreach: The university organizes events and workshops aimed at raising awareness about nutrition and sustainable food practices. These outreach programs encourage community engagement and promote healthier lifestyles among residents.

Collaboration with Government and NGOs: ADU partners with government entities and non-governmental organizations to contribute to food security efforts. These collaborations help leverage resources and expertise to address local food challenges.

Conclusion

In conclusion, both the Abu Dhabi government and Abu Dhabi University are committed to achieving SDG 2 by addressing food security and promoting sustainable agricultural practices. Through strategic initiatives, investments in technology, educational programs, and community engagement, they are working towards ensuring that all residents have access to safe and nutritious food, thus contributing to a healthier and more sustainable future.

sdg2-1

As part of Abu Dhabi University’s (ADU) Innovate Strategy (ADUi) efforts focused on accelerating sustainable and innovative agricultural solutions, ADU inaugurated its first on-campus AirFarm, an inflatable and portable farm, in collaboration with Midbar, a smart ag-tech South Korean company and H.E. Rashed Bin Khalfan Al Mutawa Al Dhaheri Holding company (RBK). This inauguration is a result of a recent Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed between ADU, Midbar, and RBK, to establish a business framework for delivering supply and Research and Development (R&D) solutions to the UAE market across several sectors. These sectors include but are not limited to agriculture, Internet of Things (IoT) and Artificial Intelligence (AI), health, and water desalination.

Through this facility, ADU aims to maximize its innovation efforts to provide students, faculty and the wider UAE community with sustainable and inclusive solutions to overcome challenges and foster innovative thinking. The space will enable students and faculty with the opportunity to positively impact the UAE community by providing practical learning opportunities, fostering interdisciplinary collaboration, promoting innovation, and contributing to sustainable solutions in agriculture, which reflects with the UAE's commitment to a sustainable and innovative future.

The project integrates various technologies, including the IoT and AI, in addition to more than 15 cutting-edge solutions, to create a sustainable environment for food security and agriculture.

A wide group of ADU’s senior management attended the inauguration, including Professor Ghassan Aouad, ADU Chancellor, Saeed Bin Rashed Khalfan Aldhaheri Vice Chairman, RBK and Mr. Moses Seo, Midbar CEO, in the presence of representatives from RBK, Gracia Group, Korea Trade-Investment Promotion Agency, American Chamber of Commerce Abu Dhabi, Modus Capital and Elite Agro Projects.

During the inauguration, attendees had the opportunity to tour and explore the Airfarm in addition to witnessing the inaugural harvest of fresh produce. They have also experienced firsthand delicious and nutritious produce grown on the Airfarm, underscoring its potential for promoting food security and sustainable farming practices globally. Advanced smart farming solutions support the community by increasing crop yields by up to 30% and reducing labor costs by up to 80%, as well as the need for inputs such as water and fertilizer.

Professor Ghassan Aouad, Chancellor of Abu Dhabi University (ADU), said: “We are honored to collaborate with Midbar to establish an AirFarm on campus, a facility that yields sustainable solutions to our community. Through this facility, we aim to provide our students and faculty with the tools and resources to explore new ideas that will enable them to become influential leaders. At ADU, we are dedicated to nurturing an environment that not only encourages innovation and critical thinking but also empowers our students to develop groundbreaking ideas that will shape a more sustainable future for generations to come.

ADUi is focused on three main pillars including innovation, research and incubation which will serve as the engine for the advancement of innovation and entrepreneurship education in the UAE. The Strategy provides a “safe zone” for discovery, testing and controlled risk-taking that will afford optimum opportunities for the success of creative minds. In addition, it builds on the university-based research to empower both aspiring as well as seasoned innovators to pursue new ways to conceptualize, manifest and deliver product-value for a more sustainable and inclusive world.

Midbar is an innovative smart Ag-tech, enabling farmers in distressed areas around the world to grow food sustainably, effectively, and affordably. Midbar’s end-to-end smart farm solution is based on self-developed, innovative patent technologies comprising hardware made of advanced materials, IoT, and automated control systems.

Introduction

Sustained economic growth cannot be achieved without social inclusion as the whole of society has a role to play in the development of a country. Federal Law No. 13 of 1972 and its amendments by the law (No.2) in 2001 was issued by the Ministry of Community Development.

(MOCD) as the first law to provide social benefits to members of the community to ensure and sustain the high quality of living for all UAE citizens. The Ministry continues to work today on enhancing social inclusion for all members of society where social benefits are extended to cover twenty-one segments of the community.

The UAE government has a future vision to change the culture of social support from the current ‘social welfare’ model to ‘sustainable social development’ that encourages independence and growth of families across the UAE.

ADU is determined to overcome all challenges that ADU and our students might face as a result of the poverty. We continue to be dedicated to empowering and inspiring outstanding students to pursue their goals. Our scholarships and financial aid programs are available to all students who want to fund their academic programmes. We consider it our duty to provide equal opportunities to students interested in pursuing higher education, enabling them to contribute to society regardless of their financial situation.

In additional to financial aid, ADU scholarships are being provided to outstanding students, through seven main categories, including the Sheikh Hamdan Bin Zayed Scholarship, the President’s Scholarship, the University Scholarship, the Academic Scholarship, the Athletic Scholarship, the Alumni Scholarship, and the Family Tuition Waiver.

We take pride in attracting the brightest students in the UAE and offer them generous support, to excel in their studies. Our Scholarship and Financial Aid programmes are part of ADU’s corporate social responsibility and are influenced by the UAE’s great leadership. ADU is constantly finding pioneering and innovative ways to support and facilitate the needs of our students to help them achieve their academic degree.
