Food security has been defined by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (the ‘FOA’) as “all people, at all times, have physical, social, and economic access to sufficient, safe and nutritious food that meets their food preferences and dietary needs for an active and healthy life”.
Sustainable Development Goal 2 (SDG 2) aims to end hunger, achieve food security, improve nutrition, and promote sustainable agriculture. In the UAE, a country that has made significant strides in achieving food security, both the government and institutions like Abu Dhabi University (ADU) are actively addressing this goal:
Food Security Strategy: The UAE government has implemented a comprehensive Food Security Strategy aimed at enhancing the nation's self-sufficiency in food production. This includes initiatives to increase domestic agricultural production, invest in modern farming techniques, and secure food supply chains.
Food Aid Programs: The UAE government engages in humanitarian efforts to combat hunger globally. It provides substantial food aid to countries in need, particularly during emergencies and crises.
Research and Innovation: The UAE invests in research and innovation to advance sustainable agriculture practices, increase crop yields, and reduce food waste.
Agricultural Research: ADU's researchers and faculty members may engage in agricultural research projects that contribute to sustainable food production and improved crop yields. Their work helps advance local and regional agricultural practices.
Nutrition and Health Education: The university may offer programs and initiatives that educate students and the community about nutrition, healthy eating habits, and food security issues. This knowledge empowers individuals to make informed dietary choices.
Community Outreach: ADU can engage in community outreach programs that provide support to vulnerable populations, including food assistance and educational programs focused on food security and nutrition.
Sustainable Agriculture Education: ADU may offer courses and training in sustainable agriculture practices, encouraging students to pursue careers in agriculture and contribute to local food production.
Partnerships: The university can collaborate with government agencies, NGOs, and private-sector partners to support initiatives related to food security, sustainable agriculture, and hunger alleviation.
While the UAE has made significant progress in ensuring food security, addressing SDG 2 remains an ongoing effort. Abu Dhabi University's contribution to this goal through education, research, and community engagement helps raise awareness and build human capacity to tackle hunger and promote sustainable agriculture practices in the UAE and beyond. Both the government and educational institutions like ADU play essential roles in achieving a world with zero hunger.
