Sustained economic growth cannot be achieved without social inclusion as the whole of society has a role to play in the development of a country. Federal Law No. 13 of 1972 and its amendments by the law (No.2) in 2001 was issued by the Ministry of Community Development.
Sustainable Development Goal 1 (SDG 1) aims to eradicate poverty in all its forms and dimensions. Poverty is a complex and multifaceted issue that affects individuals and communities worldwide, and addressing it is fundamental
to achieving sustainable development. In Abu Dhabi, a city known for its affluence, Abu Dhabi University (ADU) plays a crucial role in addressing SDG 1 through various initiatives:
Scholarships and Financial Aid: ADU offers a range of scholarships and financial aid programs to ensure that talented individuals, regardless of their financial circumstances, have access to quality education. By reducing
financial barriers to education, the university helps students lift themselves and their families out of poverty.
Education and Skills Development: ADU provides high-quality education and skills development programs that empower students with the knowledge and expertise needed to secure well-paying jobs and contribute to economic growth. A
well-educated workforce is essential for poverty reduction.
Research and Policy Advocacy: The university's research centers and faculty members engage in research related to poverty alleviation and economic development. Through research findings and policy advocacy, ADU contributes to
shaping effective strategies and policies aimed at reducing poverty in the UAE and beyond.
Community Engagement: ADU actively participates in community engagement initiatives, collaborating with local organizations, government agencies, and NGOs dedicated to poverty reduction. These partnerships often involve outreach
programs, training, and support for marginalized communities.
Entrepreneurship and Innovation: ADU fosters entrepreneurship and innovation among its students, empowering them to create businesses and initiatives that can generate income and employment opportunities, ultimately contributing
to poverty reduction.
By addressing the various dimensions of poverty through education, research, community engagement, and innovation, Abu Dhabi University is making significant strides toward achieving SDG 1. The university's commitment to eradicating poverty aligns with its mission to create positive societal impact and empower individuals to lead fulfilling lives while actively contributing to the development of Abu Dhabi and the wider region.
