Budgeting for Professional Development

https://cdn.adu.ac.ae/images-container/docs/default-source/research/faculty-professional-development-policy.pdf?sfvrsn=ff19b898_2

In addition to the Internally Funded Research Grants made available to faculty to support their research projects, the University will allocate every year in the annual operating budget of each College a percentage of the total faculty cost of the College (normally 2.5%) for other professional development programs. Such programs aim to develop the capabilities of all faculty members in working towards excellence in the University's core functions of learning and teaching; dissemination of research output, developing closer links with the industry, business and the community; and enhancing their management and leadership skills. Portion of the faculty professional development budget could be used to assist faculty members in participating in national and international conferences to facilitate the dissemination of their research. Priority will be given to the presentation of accepted full research papers in refereed conferences. All applications should be made on the appropriate form, signed by the Department Chair and the Dean of the College, and must be accompanied by full documentation detailing the nature of the participation, the letter of acceptance of the research paper and the basis for calculating the costs. Given that the funds allocated will never satisfy all expectations, each College will establish its own professional development priorities and an allocation process using:

· This policy

· The University Strategic Plan

· The College Strategic Plan

· The principles of:

o Equitable access to professional development support over time,

o Openness in decision making criteria and processes,

o Peer review to establish comparative quality, and

o Due process to resolve conflicts of interest.

Norms and variations are expected to emerge in each College and across the University, consistent with the disciplines represented. For example, it is expected that all faculty proposing to present papers at conferences will normally have the opportunity to receive a degree of support on a rotating cycle, depending upon the number of requests each year, the funds available, and the quality of proposals as determined by peer review.

Such support will require reciprocal contributions by faculty to the College and University, for example, through:

· Archiving all presented papers in the University Library, Abu Dhabi University Version : 07 Page 8 of 8 PRO – Faculty Professional Development Policy (20.PRO07R) Version date : 7 December 2020

· Departmental and College seminars,

· Providing professional development opportunities for colleagues,

· Publications that benefit from the feedback gained,

· Improvements to the content and pedagogy of taught courses, and Exceptions The Chancellor reserves the right to decide on any situation/circumstances outside the conditions stated in this policy.

Abu Dhabi University. ADU has allowed its students with overdue fees to continue attending classes through the difficult months of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Abu Dhabi: Abu Dhabi University (ADU) has given more than Dh50 million to scholarships and financial aid for the academic year 2020-2021, including additional financial support to students whose lives and education have been negatively impacted by COVID-19.

The university’s scholarship and financial aid programs have eased the financial burden of nearly 14,000 students since ADU’s inception in 2003, according to a university statement issued on Wednesday.

When COVID-19 emerged during the spring semester 2019-2020, it profoundly changed the lives of university students across the world. It impacted enrolment and students’ ability to pay tuition fees, so ADU allowed its students with overdue fees to continue attending classes through the difficult months.

In addition, ADU responded to COVID-19 and the difficulties it presented through several initiatives. In collaboration with First Abu Dhabi Bank, it introduced a new payment facility, ‘Easy Payment Plan’, for students who wanted to pay their tuition fees in instalments with 0 per cent interest. ADU also implemented and enhanced its online offerings, demonstrating a high level of awareness of the required precautionary measures to prevent the spread of the virus. It also put in place counselling services to support students.

Twenty per cent discount

In recognition of their tireless efforts and devotion to safeguarding the health and safety of our community during the COVID-19 outbreak, ADU offered a 20 per cent discount to the UAE’s frontline workers in the health care sector who wished to enrol in undergraduate or postgraduate degrees at ADU.

“ADU is determined to overcome all challenges that ADU and our students might face as a result of the pandemic. We continue to be dedicated to empowering and inspiring outstanding students to pursue their goals. Our scholarships and financial aid programs are available to all students who want to fund their academic programs. We consider it our duty to provide equal opportunities to students interested in pursuing higher education, enabling them to contribute to society regardless of their financial situation,” said Professor Waqar Ahmad, ADU chancellor.

‘Attracting the brightest students’

In additional to financial aid, ADU scholarships are being provided to outstanding students, through seven main categories, including the Sheikh Hamdan Bin Zayed Scholarship, the President’s Scholarship, the University Scholarship, the Academic Scholarship, the Athletic Scholarship, the Alumni Scholarship, and the Family Tuition Waiver.

“We take pride in attracting the brightest students in the UAE and offer them generous support, to excel in their studies. Our Scholarship and Financial Aid programmes are part of ADU’s corporate social responsibility and are influenced by the UAE’s great leadership. ADU is constantly finding pioneering and innovative ways to support and facilitate the needs of our students to help them achieve their academic degree,” the chancellor said.

Professor Ahmad also thanked donors for generously contributing to our scholarship and financial aid funds.

ADU, which currently has 8,000 registered students across its four UAE campuses, offers financial support ranging from 10 per cent to 40 per cent waiver on tuition fees for high achieving financially challenged students. Interested students can apply through the University’s Scholarship Office.
