Abu Dhabi University (ADU), an internationally recognized academic institution for quality education and applied research, in partnership with the Expert Committee for Innovation and Entrepreneurship at the Ministry of Education, hosted a crash course on design thinking for the faculty of several universities.

Held at ADU’s Dubai campus, the workshop was part of phase one of the Ministry’s joint initiative with Stanford University that seeks to qualify more than 30 faculty members to teach courses in innovation and entrepreneurship. Successful participants will proceed to phase two, set to take place at Stanford University in 2018.

Dr Ibrahim Sidawi, Director of ADU’s Dubai Campus, praised the efforts of the Ministry of Education to prepare the new generation to contribute to the UAE’s transition to a knowledge-based economy. The Ministry’s diverse initiatives leverage the latest technologies and training methods – a key element of revolutionizing global economies and academia.

Within the framework of the initiative, every year, select faculty members from public and private universities are trained to teach the course that equips students with an innovative and entrepreneurial mind-set.

From previous cohorts, trained by Stanford University, the Ministry chose leading educators to form the Expert Committee for Innovation and Entrepreneurship, including Dr Anne Van Ewijk, Assistant Professor at ADU’s College of Business, and Rubina Qureshi, Course Coordinator at ADU.

The team responsible for organizing the workshop included Dr Ibrahim Sidawi, Dr Anne Van Ewijk, Bushra Mulla, Director of the Education and Social Policy Department at the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO), and Ghufrana bin Sulaiman AlShihhi, Project Manager for Education Policies at PMO.

Abu Dhabi University, an internationally recognized academic institution for quality education and applied research, yesterday hosted the first ADU Innovation 2018 Conference at its Dubai campus to shed light on the fundamental role of universities in embracing innovation and driving economic development.

Abu Dhabi University, an internationally recognized academic institution for quality education and applied research, yesterday hosted the first ADU Innovation 2018 Conference at its Dubai campus to shed light on the fundamental role of universities in embracing innovation and driving economic development.

The conference, which ran under the theme ‘The new role of universities within a Knowledge-based society’, featured an outstanding lineup of academics, researchers, government representatives, and industry speakers. Participants came together to address a number of key topics, which included the mechanisms for developing an effective triple-helix innovation model of university-industry-government collaboration and knowledge transfer, the role of universities in policy making, and ways of measuring the impact of universities on economic and social development.

Dr. Ibrahim Sidawi, Director of Abu Dhabi University’s Dubai campus, delivered a welcome note followed by a series of panel discussions. The panel of speakers consisted of experts from government, industry and academic organizations. The government representatives included Mr. Obeid Salem Al Zaabi, Director at the Emirates Centre for Strategic Studies and Research (ECSSR), who highlighted various ways of developing key skills necessary for the 21st century, in addition to ADU partners from the Department of Economic Development.

Dr. Sidawi commented, “In line with the UAE government’s vision to transition towards a knowledge-based economy, we continuously strive to bridge the gap between academia and industry. The potential for a knowledge-based society that thrives on innovation and economic diversity calls for a more prominent role for universities, which form an integral cog in the engine driving the country’s socio-economic development. Through this event, we aim to promote the importance of increasing collaboration between universities, government, and industry to explore new and ingenious ways for sharing and applying knowledge.”

The conference also saw Professor Christos Pitelis, Dean of College of Business at Abu Dhabi University, set the scene by examining the nature, determinants and actors of sustainable development and the role of the university in fostering knowledge, innovation and creativity. He then moved to the role of fundamental and technical education and research, to academia, business, government and third-sector collaboration. Professor Pitelis also highlighted the optimal division of labor between these entities that best fosters knowledge and sustainable value co-creation.

Dr. Petra Turkama, Director of Innovation at Abu Dhabi University commented, “This event has been one of many this year where we’ve had the opportunity to engage with experts and lead the dialogue on how universities can make a positive contribution to society and support the building of a generation that can lead the country’s future.”

In addition, experts from leading multinational organizations who joined the discussions included Mr. Andrea Emiliani, Business Development Executive Academia at IBM Middle East and Africa as well as Mr. Ahmed Elkabbany, General Manager of Corporate Affairs at Cisco Systems. Both highlighted how their respective organizations support their employees and students through providing training programs, skill-building activities and networking opportunities.

The conference presented an opportunity for government, academics and industry to network and exchange knowledge across different sectors and organizations.

The event was attended by a number of senior level participants and ADU faculty members, students and staff.

Under the patronage of H.H. Sheikha Fatima bint Mubarak, Chairwoman of the General Women's Union, President of the Supreme Council for Motherhood and Childhood, and Supreme Chairwoman of the Family Development Foundation, Abu Dhabi University (ADU), in collaboration with the Ministry of Community Development, is hosting the first forum on ‘Zayed and Social Responsibility’ on 20 November. In line with ADU’s strategy for the Year of Zayed, and coinciding with the UAE’s celebrations of the late Sheikh Zayed’s 100th birthday, the forum aims to shed light on the concept of University Social Responsibility (USR) and the importance of embedding it within the everyday management of institutional processes in the UAE’s higher education sector. The forum is set to take place at ADU’s main campus in Abu Dhabi.

USR is an internationally-recognized practice of integrating social responsibility into academic management, research, and community activities through initiatives that address pertinent social, economic, cultural, environmental and social justice matters.

The forum will bring together government officials and representatives from over ten universities across the UAE to discuss and highlight the role of academic institutions in contributing to building a socially responsible society. Additionally, it will focus on the mutually beneficial relationship that USR fosters between universities’ internal communities and external stakeholders.

The event will include three panel discussions encompassing a number of key speakers including Professor Thomas Clarke, Professor of Management at the University of Technology in Sydney, and Dr. Fatih Mehmet Gul, Founder and CEO of CSR Middle East. The first session will focus on ‘The UAE Government’s vision in relation to universities’ social responsibilities’, while the second session will shed light on the ‘Importance of corporate social responsibility for public and private organizations in the UAE.’ The third session will discuss ‘The role of UAE universities in a knowledge society within the social responsibility context’.

Dr. Ali Saeed bin Harmal Al Dhaheri, Chairman of ADU’s Executive Board, commented on the inaugural event. “It gives us great pleasure to host the first ‘Zayed and Social Responsibility’ forum, inspired by the late Sheikh Zayed’s legacy and values of social justice and stewardship. ADU Receives the Bronze Shield Award in Ministry of Tolerance’s Annual Tolerance Clubs Forum

ADU’s tolerance club was awarded the Ministry of Tolerance’s bronze shield award at the annual tolerance clubs forum which took place recently in Expo 2020. The award commended the club’s commitment and efforts to promote the values and meaning of tolerance through the many activities and events initiated with the College of Arts and Sciences since 2017 until today.

The students received recognition for their efforts in launching hundreds of ethical initiatives that reflected the values of tolerance and coexistence among all society members. These initiatives were implemented as part of the Islamic culture course and supported by the College of Arts and Sciences. The tolerance club also collaborated with several government and charitable departments in achieving this endeavour. Moreover, ADU’s tolerance club contributed to the “100 million campaign” that focused on donating meals and secured food aid for struggling communities around the world.

In line with UAE’s national tolerance program, ADU launched its tolerance club in 2017 in an effort to boost its values related to tolerance and co-existence in the university among its student and faculty. The University’s club promotes tolerance amongst its employee and student body and prevent them from fanaticism, extremism, as well as enriching scientific and cultural content.

Salem Mubarak Al Dhaheri, Executive Director of Community Relations at Abu Dhabi University, said: “This award is first and foremost a testament to our students who prioritize tolerance as an indispensable value across the board. The UAE National Tolerance program was launched by H.H Sheikha Lubna Al Qasim and highlights the values of tolerance in the UAE society. The program is based on seven main pillars: Islam, UAE Constitution, Zayed's Legacy and Ethics of the UAE, International Conventions, Archeology and History, Humanity, and Common Values. H.H. Sheikha Lubna Al Qasimi emphasized that through these solid values, the UAE society will continue to build up tolerance, multiculturalism, culture of acceptance of others, and reject attitudes of discrimination and hatred.

In cooperation with various entities and through special teamwork, thought initiatives and national programs will be launched such as the declaration of a Tolerance Week, establishment of a Council for Tolerance and the UAE Tolerance Centre, and the launch of Tolerance Responsibility Program for Organizations, and the UAE Charter of Tolerance and Coexistence and Peace.

In a bid to promote a culture of life-long learning, Abu Dhabi University (ADU) launched a new community-focused initiative titled “ADU’s Knowledge Seminars” which hosts a wide range of experts from both the public and private sectors, to share their personal and professional experiences and successes with students, alumni, faculty, and staff. Fostering a platform for learning, discussions, and the dissemination of knowledge, the year-long series will feature talks on human development, smart cities, Blockchain platforms, Bitcoin, VAT in the UAE, and many more. 

H.E Ali Saeed Bin Harmal Al Dhaheri Chairman of ADU’s Executive Board explained that this initiative is a qualitative step and an addition to the agenda of the university's activities and programs throughout the academic year, which will allow the members of the Abu Dhabi University family, students, graduates and academic and administrative staff. Commenting on ADU’s initiative to embrace USR, Professor Waqar Ahmad, said: “It is with great honor and pride that ADU takes the lead in becoming the first academic institution in the United Arab Emirates to focus seriously on University Social Responsibility. Universities have a huge responsibility in ensuring that their graduates, the next generation of leaders, have a commitment to social responsibility. To instill these values in their students, faculty, staff and other stakeholders, universities have to set the standards. That is what we are trying to do as an institution.”

Dr. Ahmad added: “Implementing USR is one of many tools that will drive us towards achieving the UAE 2021 vision to build a more responsible, ambitious, confident nation grounded in its heritage. It also serves to achieve the vision of building a competitive economy driven by knowledgeable and innovative entrepreneurs.”

Abu Dhabi University Hosts Delegation from Vietnam’s Ministry of Public Security

Abu Dhabi University (ADU), recently hosted a high-level delegation from Vietnam’s Ministry of Public Security in ADU’s Abu Dhabi campus. The visit aimed to explore opportunities for future collaboration between the two parties and the exchange of best practices in strategic areas of mutual interest.

Professor Waqar Ahmad, Provost and Interim Chancellor of ADU, and senior representatives of the University welcomed the delegation, led by Major General Nguyen Xuan Ngu, Permanent Deputy Head of the Inspection Committee of the Central Public Security Party Committee. Delegates included Major General Pham Xuan Binh, Director of Policy Department, Major General Dang Tran Chieu, Director of the Yen Bai Province Police Department, and senior officials from Vietnam’s Ministry of Public Security.

Offering the visitors an overview of ADU’s latest training programs and initiatives to be launched in 2018, Professor Ahmad said: “The UAE and Vietnam enjoy long-standing friendly relations based on common interests, and ADU is delighted to contribute to strengthening these bilateral ties. The visit of the Vietnamese delegation provides an ideal opportunity to share our expertise in university management and organization training, and aligns with our strategy to expand our global synergies.”

In line with strengthening bilateral relations with Ministry of Public Security of Vietnam, this visit is the second tour for Ministry of Public Security of Vietnam in ADU’s campuses. The visit highlighted ADU’s commitment to establishing and nurturing collaborations with international institutions of higher learning and research. To date, this priority has been translated through the development of joint degrees with leading universities in Australia and North America, as well as exchange programs with universities in Europe.

The students, who are enrolled in the International Business Management course taught by Dr. Anne van Ewijk, analyzed the motives for governments to intervene in international trade and FDI, including a discussion on specific trade interventions and international trade agreements. ADU is currently hosting Jenan Abu-Hakmeh, a recipient of the Fulbright U.S. Scholar Award, for the 2019-2020 academic year through the U.S. government’s flagship international educational exchange program.

ADU is currently hosting Jenan Abu-Hakmeh, a recipient of the Fulbright U.S. Scholar Award, for the 2019-2020 academic year through the U.S. government’s flagship international educational exchange program. Abu-Hakmeh will undertake research at ADU, under the advisement of Dr. Fauzia Jabeen, Associate Professor of Management in the College of Business at ADU, as part of a project which seeks to investigate the influence of gender parity legislation on working women in the UAE.

Abu-Hakmeh is one of over 800 U.S. citizens who will teach, conduct research, and/or provide expertise for the 2019-2020 academic year through the Fulbright U.S. Scholar Program.  Recipients of Fulbright awards are selected based on both academic and professional achievement, as well as record of service and demonstrated leadership in their respective fields.

Commenting on the exchange program, Dr. Fauzia Jabeen, Associate Professor of Management and Ms. Abu-Hakmeh’s Fulbright advisor at ADU’s College of Business, said, “The Fulbright is one of the most renowned international educational exchange programs worldwide, and truly serves to build lasting connections between U.S. scholars and their counterparts from around the world. The projects sponsored by The Fulbright Program are an asset in establishing collaborative research programs globally, and Ms. Abu-Hakmeh’s contributions will undoubtedly fortify ADU’s current research efforts. Furthermore, her study has the potential to help policymakers and related associations formulate and develop policies to strengthen female empowerment, both regionally and globally”.

Jenan Abu-Hakmeh said: "It is indeed a great honor to be a recipient of the Fulbright U.S. Scholar Award and to represent the United States in this cultural exchange program organized by Abu Dhabi University. I am very eager to learn more about the UAE and its exemplary approach to empower women through establishing the Gender Balance Council that ensures that Emirati women continue to play a leading role in the development of the UAE. I am also extremely excited to be conducting my research at ADU under the supervision of Dr. Fauzia Jabeen."

(MOCD) as the first law to provide social benefits to members of the community to ensure and sustain the high quality of living for all UAE citizens. The Ministry continues to work today on enhancing social inclusion for all members of society where social benefits are extended to cover twenty-one segments of the community.

The UAE government has a future vision to change the culture of social support from the current ‘social welfare’ model to ‘sustainable social development’ that encourages independence and growth of families across the UAE.

ADU is determined to overcome all challenges that ADU and our students might face as a result of the poverty. We continue to be dedicated to empowering and inspiring outstanding students to pursue their goals. Our scholarships and financial aid programs are available to all students who want to fund their academic programmes. We consider it our duty to provide equal opportunities to students interested in pursuing higher education, enabling them to contribute to society regardless of their financial situation.

Emirates Red Crescent and ADU Launch a Humanitarian Funding Campaign

Emirates Red Crescent and Abu Dhabi University recently launched the Education Support Campaign in coordination with Abu Dhabi Cooperative Society and Lulu Group International. Through this collaboration, ADU and Emirates Red Crescent will support disadvantaged students in their university studies, providing them with an opportunity for a successful educational journey. The campaign aims to raise 10 million dirhams, and students will benefit from these funds starting 24 November 2021 and for one year. (This activity is licensed by the Department of Community Development – Abu Dhabi, permit number 022).

Abu Dhabi Cooperative Society and Lulu Group International will aid the campaign by facilitating donations through their different points of sale. Community members will show their solidarity by donating valuable aid to students, starting at two dirhams.

Public donations will be accepted via text message through Etisalat and Du. Bank donations can be sent to Sharjah Islamic Bank - account number (11445518006), IBAN (AE350410000011445518006). Individuals can also donate through the link provided on the Emirates Red Crescent website (https://www.emiratesrc.ae/eduadu), with the donations ranging from ten dirhams to 1,000 dirhams.

H.E. Salem Al Rayes Al Ameri, Deputy Secretary-General for Local Affairs at Emirates Red Crescent, said, "Sponsoring students is one of the permanent and continuous programs within the initiatives of the Humanitarian and Development Authority. We continue to witness a high rate of response and generosity from sponsors and benefactors. These donations are considered a true embodiment and reflection of the authority's efforts to invest in empowering individuals and guiding them towards achieving their aspirations and fulfilling their dreams."

Al Ameri added, "The Authority acknowledges the important role it plays in preparing future generations for the responsibilities of tomorrow."

Al Ameri praised the existing cooperation between the Emirates Red Crescent and Abu Dhabi University, which seeks to support education and provide opportunities to disadvantaged students whose family circumstances prevent them from continuing their educational path. The cooperation embodies Abu Dhabi University's commitment to fulfilling its social responsibility, as well as its leading academic role in advancing science and education as the most important pillars of human development in the country. He also praised the role of the Abu Dhabi Cooperative Society and Lulu International Group in supporting the activities of the campaign.
