A prototype of the robot developed by students of Abu Dhabi University.
Abdulrahman Saeed, Staff Reporter
Five female students at Abu Dhabi University (ADU), Saba Barfis, Dana Al Manala, Tasneem Al Assaad, Lin Al Asadi, Iman Al Naqbi, under the supervision of Dr Mohammed Ghazal, Dr Anas Al Tarabshah, and engineers Omar Al Ali, Yasmin Al Khalil, Marah Al Halabi, and Maha Yaghi created a robot using artificial intelligence to clean the sea from various types of plastic, floating and mineral waste, which threaten the marine environment.
The new robot is powered entirely by solar energy which is a clean, reliable, and sustainable energy source.
The student, Saba Barfis, explained that the robot works with an autonomous, self-driving and sustainable mechanism for cleaning the sea, as it is specifically designed to clean water surfaces safely and continuously.
Student Dana Al Manala said, "The amount of waste is increasing in the world every year, and human practices affect the land and water surfaces, threatening the marine environment with plastic and other types of floating waste. This endangers marine life and thus humans, as many fish, turtles, and aquatic species die due to eating plastic. Our invention aims to help revive the aquatic environment by purifying it from all kinds of waste floating on its surfaces, in addition, our robot will help people working in the field of cleaning water surfaces by significantly reducing their long working hours.
Student Tasneem Al Assaad explained that the robot is designed to navigate autonomously in a marine environment by studying multiple paths and deciding on the most energy-efficient path based on the number of waste and detected obstacles.
Tasnim added that by using the robot, the entire sea can be cleaned with solar energy, as its battery is charged through an off-grid photovoltaic system upon completion of the cleaning trip.
A DIP controller is also used to ensure that the robot does not deviate from its path, using artificial intelligence, which enables the robot to detect and track waste in the marine environment.

· Integrated as part of Public Health program curriculum
Abu Dhabi University (ADU), an internationally recognized academic institution for quality education and applied research, has launched a Happiness Course as part of the core requirements of its Public Health program across campuses in Abu Dhabi and Al Ain.
Marking the first time that such a curriculum is to be offered at ADU, the Introduction to Happiness and Positive Psychology Course focuses on the definition of happiness, positive psychology, principles of positive psychology and happiness, as well as on positive psychology strategies and the practical application of happiness. It will also cover the core components of positive psychology with an emphasis on the optimistic side of human nature and the most effective ways for individuals to thrive and achieve their potential.
Speaking at the launch, Dr Deena Elsori, Head of Department of Applied Sciences and Mathematics at ADU, said: “The happiness course is a fruitful outcome of several rigorous workshops and training programs for our faculty members on the concept and notion of happiness. Faculty members participating in the training sessions examined ways to develop individual happiness, understand the fundamentals of positive psychology, and how to transfer this learning into their roles as educators. We are confident that this first-of-its-kind course will help our students focus better on their individual well-being.”
ADU student Ghaid Mari Ghazi, said: “I opted to for this course as I am keen to learn how to live in the moment, stay more optimistic/positive about life and spread happiness around me. This course gives me a valuable opportunity to understand the science and figure out how to apply the techniques in our everyday lives.”
Leandro Meneghetti, another ADU student added: “This course is largely pragmatic and includes programs, interactions, group activities, games and practical homework. We are taught how to apply our strengths, positive emotions, meaningful engagements and relationships, as well as of accomplishment in promoting well-being and maintaining happiness.”
Fiona Barron, faculty member at ADU, has significant regional experience pioneering academic and corporate well-being programs, and is credited with developing and conducting the course, said “I began the course by asking the students about their expectations and what they want to achieve by undertaking this experience. The feedback I received revolved around ways to increase self-confidence and positive energy, while dealing with stress, live in the moment and remain content. With the United Arab Emirates’ classification of the year 2015 as the “Year of Innovation”, Abu Dhabi University is determined to take the lead at the educational frontier in graduating national cadres that can participate in the nation’s race towards establishing a knowledge-based economy that becomes a global force to be reckoned with. Twenty Master of Engineering Management students at the University’s College of Engineering just completed a course titled “Innovation and Entrepreneurship”, which was integrated into the curriculum with the start of the academic year. The course aims to boost the innovative spirit and entrepreneurship culture amongst the students, enabling them to utilize research and discovery methodologies to break the mold and think outside the box.
Part of the “Innovation and Entrepreneurship” course gave the participating students the opportunity to attend workshops at the recent “WSA-mobile Global Congress 2015”, during which the students prepared case studies that highlighted some of the winning projects of the WSA, thereby giving them further insight into the limitless world of technological innovations.
Commenting on this addition to the curriculum, Rima Shaban, Manager of the Innovation and Entrepreneurship Centre “ADU Enterprise” explained that the workshops embodied the practical in -the -field knowledge Abu Dhabi University ensures to instill in both undergraduate and postgraduate students. “Entrepreneurship and innovation are an integral part of the academic curriculum of most programs offered at Abu Dhabi University. They are characteristics that are very much in demand and are considered the driving force of SMEs which constitute the backbone of the UAE’s non-oil GDP and will the enhance the nation’s transition into a knowledge-based economy. Abu Dhabi University has always been keen on contributing to the development of a workforce that is inclined to more innovative industries. Our partnership with WSA-mobile Global Congress 2015 is part of our commitment to that contribution. As part of their academic curriculum, around 20 of ADU’s Master of Engineering Management Students were given the opportunity to develop business case studies on several winning projects of the WSA. These case studies allowed our students to further educate themselves on the concepts of innovation and entrepreneurship, thereby broadening their horizons and encouraging them to spread ADU’s innovative culture”.
Although the “Innovation and Entrepreneurship” course is currently only a part of the academic curriculum of ADU’s Master of Engineering Management and the Master of Project Management and as a graduation project component of the undergraduate engineering programs; however, the University is working on integrating the course within the academic curriculum of the rest of its undergraduate programs as well. Crowned the “Best Supporting University for Entrepreneurship” in the UAE and the Arab World during the Mohammed Bin Rashid Award for Young Business Leaders in its 8th cycle, Abu Dhabi University is bound to lead higher educational institutions in the region through their exploration of the world of innovation.
