World Oral Health Day is observed every year on 20 March to raise awareness about the importance of oral hygiene and to promote good oral health practices. The day is an opportunity to educate people about the significance of maintaining good oral hygiene, emphasize the importance of regular dental check-ups, and raise awareness about oral diseases and their prevention. The prevalence and impact of oral diseases are significant. They affect over four billion people globally, and the global burden of these conditions has increased by 20% since 1990.

World-Oral-Health-Day-sliderOral health is a key predictor of general health, and dietary and nutritional factors can influence oral health directly and indirectly. It is recommended that all healthcare practitioners grasp the possible links between nutrition and oral health. The oral cavity serves as a vehicle for transferring disease-causing bacteria and a point of entry for systemic infections. These microorganisms or their cytotoxic byproducts have been linked to dental caries, periodontitis, and pharyngeal infections. WHO recommends lowering sugar intake to less than 5% of total energy intake for a minor reduction in the risk of dental caries. Recent studies show that poor oral health increases the risk factor for chronic diseases like cardiovascular disease, certain types of cancer, and diabetes.

Proper intake of vitamins, especially vitamin B complex, C, A, and D, is essential for protecting enamel and dentin hypoplasia. Moreover, calcium and phosphorus are key components to safeguard enamel and dentin. In addition, a good intake of vegetables and protein and more honey, cheese, and plain yogurt is recommended for improving oral health. MyPlate recommendations are good for maintaining excellent dental health, along with regular dental check-ups. Conversely, a bad diet increases the risk factors for dental issues.
