Program Educational Objectives

The following program objectives are broad statements that describe the career and professional accomplishments that should be achieved a few years after graduation. In general, our graduates are expected to:

• Demonstrate an understanding of concepts in the field of media and communication in the digital age
• Exhibit professional competencies in the field of media and communication, such as oral and written communication proficiencies, critical thinking, decision-making, and problem-solving
• Demonstrate a strong understanding of professional ethics and accepted standards of media integrity

Student Outcomes

The following learning outcomes describe competencies and skills that our students acquire by graduation:

• An ability to apply contemporary theories and concepts of communication to mass media and understand the pivotal role and responsibility that mass media has in modern society
• An ability to write high-quality content for print, broadcast, and digital media, reflecting a thorough understanding of the writing styles required for each communication channel
• An ability to critique media content in relation to the concepts of accuracy, fairness, brevity, and clarity
• An ability to evaluate media content based on principles of ethical reasoning for media, such as balance, impartiality, and credibility
• An ability to produce high-quality media work independently or collaboratively, using negotiation and conflict resolution skills
• Apply a variety of strategic communication techniques relevant to public relations and advertising to effectively communicate key messages about diverse organizations while meeting ethical media standards
